Well, actually, it should read, “Whom do you want to be?”
You’ve probably written goals before. Things you’d like to have, places you’d like to go, and things you’d like to do. I’m adding “play golf decently” for next year’s list.
Goals are great, even indispensable, but the thing is, you need to define the kind of person who accomplishes what you want first. It’s taken me a long time to get that. Too much focus on doing/having (especially “getting”) and not enough on being.
In other words, being precedes doing and having. I hate to repeat this, but we are human beings, not human doings or havings.
So, if you’re thinking about the upcoming holidays, new year, and life passing so quickly, give some thought to the kind of person you want to be. What kind of person does the stuff you want to do?
The being question usually leads to thinking about habits.
Thinking about habits doesn’t sound very glamorous. But that’s where the foundation for extraordinary living lies. And the really good news is you can include the habit of having time to goof off. I highly recommend that you do. Leaving that sort of space is your life is the only way to experience breakthrough thinking and inspiration.
Think of it this way, “I’m the kind of person who…” and complete the sentence ten times.
I’m the kind of person who….
* is relaxed about finances.
* swims twice a week.
* laughs a lot. **
* enjoys teaching inside and especially outside the classroom.
* is always reading good books.
Well, I won’t go on but you get the idea.
** I am also, apparently, the kind of person who posts her dreams on Facebook. My daughters and I have had so much laughter about the idea of our moving to Peru for me to work as a street vendor. Needless to say, my teen-age daughter is all for that! 😉
