Personal trainers, personal assistants, pda’s and now……personal themes? Who would have thunk? Naturally the brainiacs at Mixonian Institute would come up with personal theme. I’ve been making goal lists forever, but I learned a new way of thinking about moving forward from Christine Kane. She teaches choosing a word to guide you for each year. I first learned about this, I was beginning to blog, finishing my doctoral program, tutoring and thinking about starting a business. The word I chose for 2008 was "organize" and for 2009 "wealth." Last year my word was "ease," not because I expected my life to be easy, but to counteract my tendency to make things harder than they need to be. Choosing these words has been helpful but for 2011 I’m setting a personal theme.
Goal lists are good; I’ve never been good with resolutions or diets. A word to guide you is helpful, but you can say more in a theme. The point of all this (personal theme business) is to perceive your current situation differently, to be able to see these incredible blessings and opportunities that are right in front of you and you’re not seeing them right now.
A theme could be something like, caring community, a daring adventure, art that rocks, overflowing abundance, bodacious fashion or….gracious living.
The thing is, you define your theme for yourself. We could both decide on "everyday glamour" for our theme, but your version would look quite different from mine. Writing a description of what your theme means to you is a good exercise for your journal. (Remember, the journal?)
Here are the concepts I wanted to include in my theme for 2011:
Connect people and ideas.
Love your life.
These are my rules for living. But to get it into a single theme, I’m with "gracious living," unless you have a suggestion to make it more awesome.
For me, gracious living is about making everything I do as special as possible. I want to do fewer things, and do them better, both at work and at home. I want to keep creating new projects/workshops/programs (aka "creating art") that connect my wonderful people to exciting ideas. I want to make my home more beautiful and be more glamorous. This is all about savoring each day to the maximum, instead of focusing so much on quantitative benchmarks.
Anyone want to share your theme for 2011? It’s going to be spectacular, I just know it!
