Yep. The unthinkable happened once again. Last week Gwen Stefani and I turned 39. I’m not sure how GS celebrated but at my house we ordered lemon curd cake from Sugar Bakeshop (totally worth every single calorie) BUT…. thanks to Joaquin, we were not able to pick it up Saturday. Fortunately we were well stocked with Prosecco.
Birthdays are delightful but … also sobering (despite the adult beverages) as they also remind you of so many things you haven’t done yet. And things I have achieved usually take way more time and effort than I ever imagined. So it’s tempting to think it’s not possible to do these things and go down a spiral called #not fair.
Such a crock.
Fortunately, I read this sentence.
“There are many more people trying to meet the right person than to become the right person.” That is attributed to Gloria Steinem.
One of the things I’ve always felt about myself is “not well-connected.” To make it worse, I’ve occasionally had the opinion that my professional life could be better if only I knew “the right people.” And what’s downright embarrassing and causing me to blush is that I actually know tons of amazing people. I am actually honored by number of and caliber of the people on my team in this game of life.
To believe you don’t know the right people is actually an irrelevant statement even if you don’t actually know the right people.
The game is won when you decide to Be the Right Person. You are the right person.
You can always be a good role model for your company, organization or industry. You already are deeply impactful to the people you work with, your colleagues, clients and girl bosses (and boy bosses).
You can always help people. You don’t need to know anyone in particular to be the example in your unique way.
You can become more of the person you want to be, regardless. Read a bit more to see 5 seriously easy Quick Start messages you can send to move you to higher positivity, encouragement, inspiration and perhaps even deliver a dose of clarity.
Each year, each month, each day, is a fresh start. No matter how many times you turn 39, no matter how many times things don’t work out the way we want, there is so much left to accomplish.
